Sabah Internet coverage surpasses 98% in populated areas, says minister

KOTA KINABALU: Internet connectivity in populated areas in Sabah has exceeded 98% as of February this year, said Datuk James Ratib (pic).

The Sabah Education, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister said coverage increased from 73% in 2025.

James said this in response to Sekong assemblyman Alias Sani, who asked about gaps in Internet connectivity, during the question-and-answer session at the State Assembly sitting here on Thursday (April 29).

Under the National Digital Network Plan, 663 new telecommunications towers have been built and are operational; all 5,304 existing transmitting stations have been upgraded; a total of 335,254 premises are ready with fibre-optic broadband access; and all 138 locations have broadband wireless access, he said.

He said that for Sekong, all three new telecommunications towers have been built and are operational; all 98 transmission towers have been upgraded; and 6,441 targeted premises have been provided with broadband access, with both identified locations having these services.

“In the effort to bridge digital gaps, the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has prepared a collective internet connectivity plan through a total of 1,099 National Information Dissemination Centres (Nadi) nationwide,” said James.

In Sabah, there are a total of 131 Nadi centres which are operating fully, he said, adding that a Point of Presence (PoP) initiative is also being introduced to expand broadband connectivity nationwide.
