DAP to defend all 10 seats it won in Johor, eyeing others too, says Teo

KULAI: DAP will defend all 10 seats it won in the last Johor election, says its state chairman Teo Nie Ching.

She said seat negotiations among Pakatan Harapan parties are still ongoing, with the next meeting scheduled for next month.

"For now, I do not wish to disclose the number of seats we will be contesting as I want to respect the procedure.

"What is certain is that we will contest all the seats that we won previously, but we have also flagged some other seats that we either did not win or contest in the last round.

"There are some overlapping seats, and we hope to be able to resolve this at the next meeting in May," she told the media after the Johor DAP Youth (Dapsy) convention here on Sunday (April 19).

She had been asked how many seats the party plans to contest in the next state election, which has been widely speculated to be held this year.

In the previous state election, Barisan Nasional won 40 of the 56 legislative assembly seats, while Pakatan secured 12, with DAP winning 10 and PKR and Amanah one each.

Perikatan Nasional won three seats, two by Bersatu and one by PAS, while Muda won one seat.

Teo added that DAP hopes to field at least 30% women candidates in the upcoming state polls.

"It is not a decision we can make solely at the state level, as the candidates would have to be endorsed by the central executive council (CEC) and the candidate selection committee.

"However, that is our aim, and we will send proposals to the CEC and selection committee to express this," she said.

She noted that the top three leaders in Johor DAP, as well as its Wanita and youth chiefs, are women.
