Albanese begins visit

SUBANG: The Middle East conflict, as well as cooperation in energy and supply chain security, will be among topics of discussion between Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and visiting Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who has arrived for a three-day official visit to Malaysia.

The two leaders are also expected to look into maintaining the steady flow of essential supplies, including fuel, amid evolving global economic and geopolitical challenges.

The special aircraft carrying Albanese and his delegation landed at the Royal Malaysian Air Force base here at 5.15pm.

He was received by Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup.

Albanese then inspected a guard of honour that was mounted by two officers and 26 personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment, led by Capt Muhamad Thabrani Mohamad Sharudin.

Today, the Australian Prime Minister will be accorded an official welcome ceremony in the administrative seat of Putrajaya.

This will be followed by a four-eyed meeting and a bilateral meeting involving senior ministers and officials from both countries.

Both prime ministers are scheduled to witness the exchange of memoranda of understanding covering areas of mutual interest, Bernama reported.

Anwar and Albanese are expected to hold a joint press conference to announce the outcomes of their discussions and reaffirm their commitment to strengthening Malaysia-Australia relations.

Australia is a significant economic partner for Malaysia, ranking as Malaysia’s 12th largest trading partner in 2025, with total bilateral trade valued at RM78.63bil.

Malaysia and Australia elevated their relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2021, providing a framework to further expand cooperation across three key pillars: economic prosperity, society and technology, as well as defence and regional security.
