Three remanded over blaze at Nibong Tebal fireworks stall

BUTTERWORTH: Three individuals have been arrested to assist with investigations into an early morning blaze at a fireworks stall in Taman Pekaka, Nibong Tebal.

Seberang Perai OCPD Supt Jay January Siowou said the two men and a woman, all locals, have been remanded for three days until Wednesday (March 25) to assist in investigations under Section 286 of the Penal Code for negligent conduct involving explosive substances.

"We received a report on the fire which took place on Sunday (March 22) at around 12.05am.

"The fire resulted in damage to several properties, including the stall, a motorcycle, two cars and adjacent premises, including a restaurant and a house.

"No injuries were reported. Initial investigations found that the stall has a valid permit from the local council," he said in a statement on Monday (March 23).

Supt Siowou said the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

"We would like to advise the public to always remain vigilant and comply with safety regulations when handling flammable materials, especially during celebrations, to avoid untoward incidents," he added.

On Sunday (March 22), a viral video showed restaurant staff rushing to close its shutters as stray fireworks hit its entrance.

In the 15-second video, staff were seen running frantically to hold down the shutters while dodging sparks and explosions.

It was reported that the blaze originated at a fireworks stall in the area, setting off the explosives on sale before spreading to surrounding structures.

Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid said the council has taken immediate action, including revoking the stall’s permit.
