Sixteen illegal immigrants detained in Johor raids


ISKANDAR PUTERI: Sixteen Indonesian illegal immigrants have been detained in three raids in Tanjung Kupang, Gelang Patah and Taman Ehsan Jaya, Johor Baru.

Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan said the first raid took place at a house in Tanjung Kupang between 1.30pm and 2.30pm on March 2.

"We managed to arrest an Indonesian man believed to be the transporter, two Indonesian men who were the transit house caretakers and two Indonesian women," he said in a statement on Friday (March 13).

ACP Kumarasan said in the second raid, a local man who acted as the transporter together with two Indonesian men and one Indonesian woman were caught at Taman Ehsan Jaya on March 2.

"The seven Indonesians, aged from 21 to 60, did not have valid travel documents," he said, adding that police also seized two cars, nine mobile phones and RM7,800 cash.

ACP Kumarasan said six Indonesians – three men and three women – were detained in the third raid at an apartment in Tanjung Kupang between 6.30pm and 7pm on March 2.

He said those caught were a male transporter, a female assistant transporter and four illegal immigrants aged from 23 to 40.

"All did not have valid travel documents," said ACP Kumarasan, adding police also seized two mobile phones, a car and RM14,000 cash.

He said the suspects are detained under Section 51(5)(b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

ACP Kumarasan said the case is being investigated under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
