Teen killed in freak sickle accident

IPOH: A college student died after sustaining severe neck injuries believed to have been inflicted with a sickle in Teluk Intan.

Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin said the 18-year-old male victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while another male student aged 17, also the victim’s college mate, sustained injuries to his hand and is receiving further treatment following the incident on Monday.

“Preliminary investigations found that the incident is believed to have occurred when a long-handled sickle carried by a man riding a motorcycle struck the victim’s neck while the victim was also riding a motorcycle.

“As a result, when the two motorcycles were close to each other on the road, the victims fell off their motorcycle,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said two Indonesian men aged 39 and 52, have been detained to assist in the investigation while the sickle and a motorcycle have been seized.

“Both suspects were brought to the Teluk Intan Magistrate’s Court yesterday, where they were remanded until March 16.

“The remand order was issued for police to continue their investigations under Section 304 (A) of the Penal Code for culpable homicide not amounting to murder,” he said.

In an unrelated incident, the body of a member of the Volunteer Fire Brigade (PBS) who was feared drowned after falling into a lake at the Lahat Mines near Pasir Puteh last night was found on Monday night.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said the victim, Cheng Ka-Jun, 25, a member of PBS Menglembu, was found at about 10.18pm by the fire and rescue team while conducting a surface search at the lake.

“The victim’s body was found floating about 70m from the bank near the location,” he said.

On Monday, the department received information about the incident at 7.27pm before a team from the Pasir Puteh and Ipoh fire and rescue stations rushed to the location with assistance from PBS Menglembu, Pekan Baru and Pasir Pinji.

The victim was reported to have been conducting training and boat testing activities at the lake with his team since 4pm, involving 16 PBS members using three boats.

The victim had boarded the boat with a driver before both were believed to have fallen into the lake when the driver made a U-turn in the middle of the lake.

The driver attempted to save the victim but also fell into the lake.

Other PBS members later rescued him, while the victim was believed to have drowned.
