Middle East conflict: No govt Hari Raya open houses this year, says PM

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered all government agencies, government-linked companies and government-linked investment companies not to hold Hari Raya Aidilfitri open houses this year.

He said this was due to the economic effects of the ongoing Middle East conflict, adding that the number of trips abroad should also be reduced.

"All ministers and members of the administration, including departments, have been ordered to limit overseas trips, aside from those that are already scheduled and are compulsory to attend.

"This sends a message for more prudent spending," he said in a special press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Wednesday (March 11).

Anwar said he was questioned by some regarding the rationale of this decision.

“I said this is a sane decision, so we won’t be affected when the situation worsens. So, let’s take a moderate and responsible approach,” he added.

Meanwhile, Anwar said a special Cabinet meeting will be held on Friday (March 13) to address the ongoing international developments that are unfolding quickly.

He said the special Cabinet meeting will deliberate on the country’s fiscal and financial position.

“We have been tested by crises before this. I am confident that with responsibility, cooperation from everyone, including the government, civil service and the private sector, we can address this issue tactfully,” he said.
