SEREMBAN: Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun admits that his driver is occasionally forced to run red lights to ensure he arrives at official events on time.
Aminuddin explained that the tight schedule of multiple daily engagements often leaves his driver with no other choice but to do so.
"I admit that we have to beat the light at times, but I have no choice, as there are sometimes several official events lined up in a day.
"If you look at my Facebook event, you will know what I am talking about," he told reporters after chairing the state exco meeting at Wisma Negri.
Earlier, a clip went viral showing a car being driven along Jalan Rasah near here, which had allegedly beaten the red light.
The driver had also allegedly used blue strobe lights and a siren to ask other motorists to give way.
Some who claimed to recognise the vehicle said it was the Negri Sembilan MB's official car.
Aminuddin clarified that his office had written to the relevant authorities to get the necessary approvals.
"I also have a police officer travelling with me in my car.
"Otherwise, I would not beat the red light. We are extremely careful when we are left with no option but to beat the light," he said.
Aminuddin apologised for having to do so but added that state leaders are given the leeway as they have several official events in a day to attend to.
Malaysians were divided on the matter, with some agreeing that a state leader serving the rakyat should have the right to do so, while others are against it due to road safety.
Those in agreement said the MB should consider using a police escort to ensure the safety of other road users.
