PAS lawmaker should assume Opposition Leader post, says Muhyiddin

PETALING JAYA: A PAS lawmaker should assume the post of Opposition Leader, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Bersatu president, however, said he has yet to receive any official communication from PAS regarding the appointment of a new Opposition Leader to replace Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

"I have not received any latest information on the matter," he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

"I am waiting for confirmation from PAS leadership on whether a decision has been made."

He said that according to the rules, the decision must be formally communicated to the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat.

"So we will wait, perhaps a day or two, or maybe next week. I am not sure," he added.

Muhyiddin said this after attending the Negeri Sembilan Bersatu breaking-of-fast event here on Saturday (Feb 28).

When asked about talks that Perikatan Nasional Whip Chief Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan would be selected for the post, Muhyiddin said he was unsure about that.

He said that Bersatu has already agreed to give PAS the right to hold the position because the party currently has the highest number of MPs within Perikatan.

"As far as the party’s position is concerned, we have made our decision," he said.

"However, the name has not been finalised, and we have given that right to PAS because it has the largest number of MPs."

"Therefore, it is only appropriate for PAS to assume the post," he added.

He also raised the matter during the recent Perikatan Supreme Council meeting, including the position of Hamzah in the Dewan Rakyat.

On Feb 22, PAS vice president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar was officially appointed Perikatan Nasional chairman, taking over from Muhyiddin.
