MA63 push not about disunity but strengthening federation, says KDM leader

KOTA KINABALU: Efforts to assert Sabah’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) are not intended to weaken the nation, but to strengthen Malaysia’s federation fairly and in line with the Constitution, says Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM).

Its vice-president Jumardie Lukman said the move is in line with the original spirit of Malaysia’s formation, which was founded on unity, mutual respect and strong ties among states in the federation.

“This is not about creating disunity, but about ensuring that Sabah’s rights are recognised based on the Constitution and the promises agreed upon,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 26).

Jumardie noted that the matter was also addressed by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim in Parliament recently, and said the royal message should serve as guidance in resolving longstanding debates surrounding MA63.

Among others, the King emphasised unity, mutual respect, constitutional responsibility and the primacy of national interest as foundational principles of the federation.

Jumardie said the reminder was timely and called on all parties to address MA63 issues without sidelining the interests of Sabahans.

He stressed that advocating for state rights should not be viewed as a threat to national unity, but as an essential step to ensure the federation remains strong and equitable.

On financial matters, including funding, allocations and revenue entitlements, he said these were clearly provided for under MA63 and the Federal Constitution.

“These are neither new nor unreasonable demands. They are provisions clearly stated in the Federal Constitution,” he said, referring to Sabah’s special grant and its 40% net revenue entitlement.

Jumardie added that Sabah and Sarawak have lagged behind other states in certain areas of development and should now receive what was promised prior to the formation of Malaysia.

“These are not burdens, but rightful entitlements that will ultimately strengthen the nation’s economy,” he said.
