KOTA KINABALU: Floods in Sabah have shifted towards the south-western parts of Sabah, hitting districts like Sook, Sipitang, Beaufort, Membakut and Tenom.
As of press time, rescuers were still working to transport displaced victims to newly-opened relief centres while registration of evacuees continued.
Hundreds of villages, houses, vehicles and other property are feared damaged, with losses still unaccounted for, while road access to many areas has been partially or totally cut off.
Fortunately, some villagers were able to make early preparations as they have been vigilant following previous instances of flooding in other areas of the state.
Last week, floods struck the northern and eastern parts of the state, with over 5,000 villagers displaced in the Pitas, Paitan, Kota Marudu, Sandakan and Beluran areas.
To date, over 1,000 people still remain at temporary shelters in Pitas. However, all are expected to return home soon.
Yesterday, Sabah Education Department director Datuk Raisin Saidin said based on updated records, some 27 schools from six districts remain closed due to floods.
