Civil servant duped out of RM404,045

SIBU: A female civil servant lost RM404,045 in an investment scam promoted on Facebook.

Acting Sibu OCPD Supt Boniface Bajai said the victim, in her 30s, lodged a report yesterday after realising she had been duped.

He said the victim was drawn to an advertisement on Facebook before being contacted and added to a WhatsApp group.

She later dealt with a woman claiming to be an assistant to an “investment guru” and was given stock recommendations.

The victim was then instructed to open an account via the Astute app and made 18 transfer transactions to three different company accounts, totalling RM404,045.

The victim became suspicious when she was asked to pay 20% of the “profits” before being allowed to withdraw dividends.
