Chief secretary praises MACC's radical approach in Port Klang e-waste crackdown

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission continues to demonstrate a strong commitment in combating misconduct and corruption through the exposure of various cases and enforcement action.

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the commission's proactive approach reflects the government's seriousness in upholding good governance and integrity.

He also congratulated the commission for its continued efforts in ensuring Malaysia remains free from corruption and abuse of power.

"Various corruption modus operandi have been successfully uncovered, including cases involving military procurement, the importation of e-waste and most recently, a mega agreement between the Malaysian government and a foreign company.

"I hope these operations and enforcement actions will serve as a reminder, especially to civil servants, to always comply with the law, uphold integrity and carry out their duties responsibly," he said when chairing the National Governance Committee meeting at the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister's Department here on Thursday (Feb 26).

He also welcomed the launch of the commission's new tagline, "Berani dan Radikal Perangi Rasuah" (Brave and Radical in Fighting Corruption), describing it as a reflection of the agency's resolve and firm stance in combating graft for the nation's well-being.

Meanwhile, commission chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the issue of plastic waste and e-waste entering the country requires urgent action and comprehensive coordination among enforcement agencies.

He said investigations and disposal of more than 800 containers of e-waste are being carried out in collaboration with the Environment Department, the Border Control and Protection Agency and the Customs Department.

"Action must be expedited without delay in line with the enforcement directives that have been set.

"At Port Klang, the Border Control acts as the coordinator, while the other agencies must be present at the location if there is information or complaints.

"For land routes, the police will coordinate with the relevant agencies for further action. We are also reviewing proposals for a moratorium, and the views will be brought to the National JTK meeting to be chaired by the Prime Minister," he said.

Port Klang Border Control commander Deputy Comm Datuk Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said firm action has been taken to detain containers suspected of carrying e-waste until verification is carried out by the Environment Department.

He added that 58 containers were seized in the latest operation.

"The Border Control will ensure that every detention is recorded more systematically and that release is only made through case meetings. Customs will list the containers in a master register for segregation purposes, whether inspected or otherwise.

"The Environment Department is also required to be present during the opening of containers, while the Border Control is developing intelligence methods to identify high-risk containers. If laws are breached, the containers will be rejected and sent out," he said.

Among those present were Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, Auditor-General Datuk Seri Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi and Border Control director-general Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain.
