Illegal animal imports seized at Port Klang

No entry: Some of the products found during the inspection in Port Klang.

KLANG: More than 159 tonnes of animal-based products worth nearly RM1.9mil were intercepted at Port Klang after authorities uncovered seven containers brought into the country without valid import permits.

Port Klang Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) commander Deputy Comm Datuk Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said the seizure was made during an operation at the CFS 4 Container Inspection Centre in Westport, Port Klang, between 11am and 2pm on Friday.

“The containers were found to be carrying more than 159 tonnes of goods worth RM1.9mil.

“The containers were found to be carrying animal-based products without valid Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (Maqis) import permits.

“Such violations pose a risk of transmitting animal diseases and may compromise food safety as well as public health,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Among the seized items were milk from New Zealand valued at RM136,820.96, frozen duck from Ireland valued at RM964,989.13, and milk powder from New Zealand valued at RM815,482.45.

“We will take firm action against any party that fails to comply with existing laws and regulations. This is in line with the government’s commitment to ensuring biosecurity, public well-being and national sovereignty are preserved,” DCP Nik Ezanee said.
