JOHOR BARU: As the Chinese New Year closes in, many have begun flocking to a carnival here to make last-minute preparations while soaking in the festive atmosphere.
Among the shoppers spotted at the Johor Jaya Chinese New Year carnival was businessman Lew Kim Huat, who was buying biscuits and fruits for prayers.
“I prefer buying them in the last few days because the goods will be cheaper and there are a lot of discounts.
“I can get things for about RM20 to RM30 cheaper compared to normal days,” he said in an interview yesterday.
Lew, who is in his 60s, said that despite the discounts, prices of goods are higher this year compared to last year.
Singaporean Clare Mock, 67, said the atmosphere in Johor Baru’s markets was lively, with plenty of choices even if the prices were slightly higher than before.
“There’s not much difference from last year’s Chinese New Year to this year, except that the crowds seem noticeably smaller, likely because the hot weather is keeping some shoppers away,” said the housewife.
Nurse L. Prema, 41, said she brought her daughter to the Chinese New Year market to introduce her to the traditions and culture of the Chinese community.
“I’m shopping for home accessories, fruits, biscuits and flowers,” she said.
