RM2.4mil foreign currency smuggling bid foiled at KLIA

PETALING JAYA: An attempt by a foreign man to smuggle foreign currencies worth RM2.4mil was foiled when he was arrested by the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), following an inspection operation at the Terminal 1 arrival hall on Friday (Feb 6).

The agency said the arrest was made between 10.30am and 1pm, shortly after the man arrived at the airport.

“Screening using a baggage-scanning machine revealed suspicious images, after which the passenger was directed to the Customs Operations Office.

“Further inspection uncovered various foreign currencies concealed in packages of new clothing,” it said in a statement on Saturday (Feb 7).

AKPS added that the foreign currencies were found in three separate pieces of luggage.

“Also seized were two mobile phones and a pouch bag,” it said.

AKPS said the case is being investigated under Section 28 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Act 613).

The man was also detained and handed over to the Customs Prevention Division for further investigation and action.

“AKPS KLIA reiterates its continued commitment to strengthening border security controls and combating all forms of smuggling and cross-border crime at the country’s entry points,” it said.
