Cops nab another 'Captain Praba' gang member with help from Thai authorities

PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested another member of the organised crime group known as “Geng Captain Praba” in an operation codenamed Ops Jack Sparrow.

Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the suspect was arrested on Feb 4 based on a warrant of arrest issued by the Sepang Sessions Court on Jan 14.

“The suspect was detained for further investigations for being a member of an organised criminal group and is being investigated under Section 130V of the Penal Code,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 5).

He added that the arrest was carried out with the cooperation and assistance of local authorities in Bangkok, Thailand, before the suspect was brought back to Malaysia.

“The suspect is also believed to be involved in a case that occurred in Subang Jaya, Selangor, in January 2025, which is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code, as well as possession of a dangerous weapon during a riot under Section 148 of the Penal Code,” he said.

He said offences under Section 326 carry a punishment of up to 20 years’ imprisonment and may also be liable to a fine or whipping, while offences under Section 148 are punishable with up to five years’ jail or a fine, or both.

He said the suspect was charged under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code at the Sepang Sessions Court at 11am on Feb 5, adding that charges under Sections 326 and 148 of the Penal Code will be brought in due course.

Comm Kumar also expressed appreciation to the Thai authorities for their close cooperation and reiterated the police’s continued commitment to upholding the rule of law to ensure national security and public safety.

Previously, Comm Kumar was reported as saying that Bukit Aman was on the hunt for the remaining members of the notorious Captain Praba gang, including its mastermind, who are believed to have fled overseas.

He said police are intensifying efforts to dismantle the gang following a spate of violent crimes linked to its members.

The gang is known for turf wars with rival groups, as well as a series of high-profile crimes, including murder and arson, particularly in Klang and Banting in Selangor.

On Jan 28, three Captain Praba gang members were charged at the Sepang Sessions Court after being extradited from Mumbai, India.

The three men are listed on Interpol’s Red Notice.
