MACC probing alleged abuse of power involving zakat funds in Penang

KUALA LUMPUR: Graft busters have opened an investigation paper into alleged abuse of power involving a senior state government official in Penang over the purchase of land using zakat funds.

Sources said the investigation was initiated following revelations made by an assemblyman during a state assembly sitting late last year.

“The investigation team has visited several offices believed to be linked to the case to obtain relevant documents, which are currently being analysed.

“In addition, investigators have recorded statements from two individuals believed to be involved in the matter,” the source said.

When contacted, Penang Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) director Datuk Karunanithy Y. Subbiah confirmed the investigation and said the case is being probed under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009, which relates to abuse of office for gratification.

He added that investigations are ongoing.
