Unconstitutional for Perikatan to function without chairman, says Takiyuddin

KUALA LUMPUR: It will be unconstitutional to change the structure of Perikatan Nasional, says Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan on the alleged abolition of the chairman’s role.

The Perikatan deputy secretary-general said the issue of the abolition of the chairman’s role never cropped up and hence such a decision never arose.

Citing the coalition’s constitution, he said Perikatan must be led by a chairman along with other senior leaders.

He said PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang is firm with on the position that the party does not agree with the abolition of the Perikatan chairman’s role.

“The position of PAS is clear, based on the letter of the PAS president. We want the structure of Perikatan to remain according to the constitution. It cannot be changed. If it is changed it will be unconstitutional,” Takiyuddin, who is also PAS secretary general, said at a press conference in Parliament.

“Authorities, especially the Registrar of Societies (RoS), can even take action. That is very clear and that is the situation” he said.

It was recently reported that former Perikatan chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had said in a letter that Bersatu and PAS had agreed to do away with the post of Perikatan Nasional chairman.

Muhyiddin, who resigned as chairman as of Jan 1, said this matter would be the main item on the agenda at a meeting Thursday (Jan 29).

In a letter to the presidents of the coalition’s component parties, dated Jan 27, Muhyiddin said Abdul Hadi had agreed to this during a meeting at Muhyiddin’s house on Jan 16.

He said that at the meeting, in place of a chairman, two councils were mooted - a presidential council led by Bersatu and an executive council led by PAS.
