Kinabatangan, Lamag by-elections: Early voting turnout at more than 89% as at 3pm, says EC

KINABATANGAN: The early voter turnout for the Kinabatangan parliamentary by-election on Tuesday (Jan 20) was recorded at 89.42%, with 169 police personnel having cast their ballots as of 3pm, according to the Election Commission (EC).

For the Lamag state by-election, it said, 169 police personnel, or 89.89% of eligible early voters, had cast their votes within the same period.

The early voting process to elect the new Kinabatangan MP and the Lamag assemblyman was conducted at the Teratak Kinabatangan district police headquarters.

A total of 196 police personnel were eligible to vote, with 189 voting in person and seven casting their ballots via post.

The Kinabatangan parliamentary by-election features a three-cornered contest involving Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar of Barisan Nasional (BN), Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman of Warisan and Independent candidate Goldam Hamid.

Meanwhile, the Lamag state by-election is a straight fight between Mohd Ismail Ayob of BN and Mazliwati Abdul Malek of Warisan.

Both by-elections were called following the death of the incumbent, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, 66, on Dec 5 last year.

The Kinabatangan parliamentary constituency comprises three state constituencies - Sukau, Lamag and Kuamut - with a total of 48,722 registered voters, while the Lamag constituency alone has 13,899 registered voters.

The EC has set Saturday (Jan 24) as the polling day for both by-elections. - Bernama
