3,383 flood victims in Sabah, Sarawak still sheltering, situation improves in both states


KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 3,383 flood victims are still being housed in temporary relief centres in Sarawak and Sabah as of Saturday (Jan 10) evening, with both states recording a decrease in the number of victims.

In Sarawak, the number of victims has decreased slightly to 3,019 from 888 families compared to 3,031 from 876 families Saturday morning.

According to the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee, all victims are accommodated in 40 shelters, namely Serian (23), one centre each in Kuching, Simunjan, Gedong, Sibu and Mukah; Bintulu, (two), Miri (three), Balai Ringin (three), and four in Samarahan.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) on Friday (Jan 9) issued a continuous rain warning at alert level for several areas in Sarawak until Saturday.

In Sabah, flood victims showed a downward trend when 364 victims from 136 families were recorded compared to 462 people from 157 families Saturday morning.

The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee secretariat informed that two shelters in Beaufort are still operating, namely the Dewan Selagon Permanent Evacuation Centre and Dewan Sri Dayang Shahbandar Padas Damit. — Bernama
