KOTA BARU: Police believe they have busted a flower seedling smuggling operation with the arrest of two men, aged 17 and 49, on the Jeli-Grik Highway.

Jeli OCPD Supt Kamarulzaman Harun said that a lorry driver and assistant were detained on Monday (Jan 5) by a police team.

He said an inspection of the suspects' vehicle found 156 boxes containing 7,900 bromeliad seedlings, believed to have been smuggled in for the local market.

Supt Kamarulzaman said the total value of the seizure, including the lorry, is estimated at RM1.395mil.

The case is being investigated under Section 6 of the Plant Quarantine Act 1976, he added in a statement on Thursday (Jan 8).

"The suspects and all confiscated items have been handed over to the Kelantan Agriculture Department for further action," he said. – Bernama
