Calls for Barisan to ditch unity govt are to reject injustices, says MCA Youth chief

JOHOR BARU: Umno Youth’s call to ditch the unity government should be viewed from a broader perspective, centred on the future of Barisan Nasional, says MCA Youth chief Ling Tian Soon.

He said that Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh’s call during the Umno Youth special convention on Saturday (Dec 3), was in line with the stance he that himself (Ling) had earlier brought up during the MCA Youth 26th Central Delegates third general assembly on Dec 6.

“I reiterate our stance that MCA should withdraw its support for the unity government if injustices against the community continue to be allowed,” Ling said in a statement on Sunday (Jan 4).

He also criticised the “continued disrespect” by certain DAP leaders towards former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, adding that the party had also failed to govern effectively despite holding ministerial positions.

He said MCA remained open to working with any political coalition, provided it shared the party’s ideology and struggles.

“MCA is open to cooperating with any coalition as long as the parties involved uphold moderation, support the Federal Constitution and are not extreme,” added Ling, who is also a Johor executive councillor.

On Saturday, Akmal said Umno Youth would propose that the party leave the unity government and instead work with PAS to form a “dignified opposition”, stressing that the move was not intended to topple the current administration through “backdoor” manoeuvres.

The proposal, raised during the Umno Youth special convention attended by about 1,500 delegates, will be brought to the Umno supreme council and later to the Umno general assembly to be passed as a resolution, he said.
