KUALA LUMPUR: A mechanic has been sentenced to three years' jail and one stroke of the cane for robbing an Indonesian woman of two mobile phones and RM1,000 in cash last month.
Sessions judge Siti Shakirah Mohtaruddin imposed the sentence on Mohamad Hasrul Aiman Mohd Hanapi, 24, after he pleaded guilty on Monday (Dec 22).
She ordered that the prison term begin from the date of his arrest on Sunday (Dec 21).
According to the charge, Hasrul, together with an accomplice who is being tried separately, robbed the 33-year-old woman at a cafe on Jalan Langkawi in Setapak at 3.32pm on Nov 5.
The charge, framed under Section 395 of the Penal Code, provides for a maximum sentence of 20 years' jail, as well as a fine and caning, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Wafa Zainal Abidin requested a deterrent sentence to serve as a lesson to the accused, but Hasrul, who was unrepresented, appealed for a lighter sentence, citing he had to support his family and mother.
At the same court, soldier Muhammad Hairul Andika Amir, 30, claimed trial to robbing the same victim at the same location, time, and date.
The court denied Hairul bail and set Jan 22 for mention of the case. – Bernama
