Cabinet changes reflect experience, portfolio fit, says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the Cabinet reshuffle announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, involving several portfolio changes and new appointments, was an appropriate move guided by experience and suitability.

The Communications Minister said this was evident in the reassignment of Hannah Yeoh from Youth and Sports Minister to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), noting that her experience as Segambut MP and active engagement on issues affecting the capital made her well-suited to the role.

"I have had many personal experiences working with Yang Berhormat Hannah Yeoh in championing various issues for the people, voters and residents of Kuala Lumpur.

"I am confident that one of her key priorities will be sustainable development," Fahmi, who is also Madani government spokesman, told reporters after officiating the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) scholarship award ceremony here Tuesday (Dec 16).

Fahmi also said the appointment of Sungai Petani MP Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari as Youth and Sports Minister was appropriate, given his active involvement and ideas in youth affairs and sports development.

"The Youth and Sports portfolio is a good fit (for Mohammed Taufiq). He is very active and has many ideas that can be translated into action to ensure continued excellence in youth and sports," he said.

At the same time, Fahmi expressed appreciation to all ministers and deputy ministers who had served prior to Tuesday's Cabinet reshuffle.

"I pray they will continue to serve in whatever capacity possible. The Prime Minister will surely consider the best ways for them to continue contributing to the nation," he said.

In a related development, Fahmi said the first Cabinet meeting following the reshuffle is expected to be held Wednesday (Dec 17), while a post-Cabinet media conference is scheduled for 2.30pm on Thursday (Dec 18).

Earlier, Anwar announced the appointment of new ministers and deputy ministers, as well as several portfolio changes in the MADANI Government Cabinet, following vacancies and the need for adjustments. - Bernama
