100 villagers left homeless


KOTA KINABALU: More than 100 villagers were left homeless after a massive fire destroyed 30 stilt ­houses in Kampung Sri Aman in Sabah’s east coast Tawau district.

The firemen had the raging fire under control swiftly in the 11.20pm ­incident on Saturday.

Tawau Fire and Rescue Department ­station chief, Deputy Supt Jemishin Ujin, said that 300 stilt houses were located in an area of about 0.55ha and the blaze destroyed 30 homes.

“Our firemen took immediate action to stop the blaze from spreading to nearby houses. Some villagers also helped us,” he said in a statement ­yesterday.

“The blaze was brought under control at 12.44am. No villagers were injured and the operation ended at 3.10am. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.”
