Sarawak’s power supply to Sabah went live from today

KOTA KINABALU: The 275kV Sabah–Sarawak Interconnection is now operational, significantly improving the power supply in the region.

Sabah Electricity said that through this cross-border transmission link, Sabah can now tap into a wider, more robust generation mix from the regional grid, significantly enhancing system stability, increasing reserve margins, and supporting long-term demand growth.

The commissioning of the new interconnection was witnessed by Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Works and Utility, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, at the Load Despatch Centre near here on Saturday (Dec 13).

The commissioning ceremony was attended by Sabah Electricity’s Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) Group Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Sharbini Suhaili.

The witnessing ceremony was held virtually, according to a Sabah Electricity news release on Saturday.

The synchronisation of the Transmission Line was connected to the Transmission Main Intake at Mengalong, Sipitang.

“Ultimately, the project positions Sabah to accelerate its energy transition agenda, improve reliability for consumers, and foster sustainable economic development across the region, " said Dr Gunsalam.

The transmission lines were successfully primed for operation on Dec 10 and began operation on Saturday, allowing an additional 30 MW to 50 MW of power to be connected to the Sabah Grid.

Sabah Electricity said that it marks a new phase in Sabah's energy transition.

Beyond Sabah, the interconnection also lays the foundation for the future ASEAN Power Grid.
