ON the final day of the Dewan Rakyat meeting for 2025, drama erupted when Opposition chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (pic) narrowly dodged a six-month suspension – a cliffhanger that now hangs over the next parliamentary session.

Takiyuddin was moments away from being hauled up after Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah pushed a motion to suspend him over his claim that a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) exercise at Masjid Rusila, Marang, resembled the infamous 1985 Memali incident.

The motion accused him of stoking public fear and smearing MMEA personnel, even though the Home Ministry had clarified that the event was nothing more than a STAR Team training drill.

The Memali incident, which saw 18 people killed when police attempted to arrest a religious teacher under the Internal Security Act, remains one of Malaysia’s most politically charged tragedies.

But just as the House braced for a showdown, Shamsul Anuar abruptly called for the motion to be postponed, saying the government had weighed the debates and taken all views into account.

“On behalf of the government, I ask for this motion to be postponed,” he told the chamber, a move that pushed the final decision into next year.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin welcomed the move, thanking the Deputy Minister for the pause.

Takiyuddin had mounted a defence earlier, insisting he should be sent before the Rights and Privileges Committee and not be judged on the floor through a direct vote.

“Send me to the Rights and Privileges Committee. Give me the right to a trial. I have the right to be heard,” he declared, noting that in three terms as MP, he had never before faced such a charge.

Calling himself “a professional and a gentleman”, Takiyuddin said he was ready to defend his case. “I have a case fit for trial,” he said.

Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul pointed out that Takiyuddin had been offered the opportunity to apologise, but had not done so.

During the debate, Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee (PN–Beluran) also challenged the Standing Order behind the motion, while Hamzah argued that Takiyuddin had raised procedural questions, not attacked the agency itself.
