TEMERLOH: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (Customs) foiled attempts to smuggle e-bikes and rice worth a total of over RM1.1mil in separate operations.
Pahang Customs director Mohd Asri Seman said the first raid involved the seizure of 434 units of electric bicycles worth an estimated RM272,200 with duties and taxes of RM127,981 in a container in North Port, Port Klang at 10.50am on Oct 9.
"The e-bikes were found to be declared as 'Bicycle', 'Racing Bicycle' and 'Kids Bicycle', but they are banned imported items that require a permit from the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti),” he said in a media conference here Tuesday (Dec 2).
In the second raid, two containers declared to be carrying flour were seized at the same day at around 1pm after the department found rice sacks hidden in the cargo, he said.
"Inspections found 7,980kg of rice flour worth RM23,940 and 41,600kg of rice worth RM832,000, with estimated duties and taxes totalling RM332,800 in the containers,” he said.
Both case are being investigated under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967. - Bernama
