Floods: Social Welfare Dept ready to activate additional relief centres, says Nancy

PUTRAJAYA: The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM) is calling on the people to prioritise personal and family safety as the country faces a challenging weather phase.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri (pic) said all residents in at-risk areas must remain vigilant, obey the authorities' instructions and immediately move to temporary evacuation centres (PPS) if instructed.

"Prioritise the safety of family members, especially children, the elderly and people with disabilities (OKU), and avoid being near rivers, low-lying areas and locations that are easily flooded.

"Those who need assistance can seek support at the nearest PPS or contact the official emergency channel," she said in a statement here Friday (Nov 29).

Nancy said KPWKM through the Social Welfare Department (JKM) will continue to monitor the situation from time to time and ensure that every affected family receives assistance as soon as possible.

She said JKM has been mobilised since the beginning together with the state governments and other disaster agencies.

"JKM is also ready to activate additional PPS at any time if the weather conditions worsen. Food, blankets and basic necessities are at an adequate level and will continue to be distributed according to the needs of the victims on the ground," she said.

Nancy said she was also saddened by two deaths due to flooding recorded in Kelantan, in Gua Musang on Nov 21 and Tanah Merah on Nov 26.

"Condolences to the families of the victims, and may they be given strength to face this very difficult moment," she said.

As of today, flooding nationwide remains serious with 242 PPS operating, involving 9,033 families and 27,489 victims.

The weather warning issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) yesterday indicated that very heavy and continuous rain was expected to occur in several states including Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, Putrajaya and Negri Sembilan.

Several other states such as Perak, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan and Johor are also at the severe warning and alert level. - Bernama
