S’wak set to be gaming hub central

KUCHING: Sarawak is set to become the focus of the regional animation and digital game industry when it hosts the Borneo Animation and Gaming Festival (BAGF) next August.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo (pic), who disclosed this, said the BAGF aimed to gather industry experts, digital content developers and the creative community, elevating Sarawak as the new animation and digital game hub in the region.

He said the BAGF was expected to focus on the participation of Asean countries, besides attracting global industry players to Malaysia.

Gobind said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has also responded positively and agreed that a joint committee be set up to draft the implementation of the programme.

“The committee will comprise representatives from the state government, Digital Ministry and Malaysia Digital Economy Corp (MDEC) to discuss the matter in more detail,” he said after paying a courtesy call on Abang Johari at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly here yesterday, Bernama reported.

Also present was Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong.

Gobind said the meeting also touched on Sarawak’s commitment to the national digitalisation agenda under the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Nation 2030 initiative to strengthen the country’s technological development and digital ecosystem.

In a statement, the ministry said the five-day BAGF will bring together some 300 industry delegates and feature over 200 exhibitors.

The participation of major global industry players including Walt Disney, DreamWorks, Netflix, Sony Pictures Animation, Konami and Nintendo was being targeted, it said.
