‘Packed races show growing discontent’

SANDAKAN: The surge in multi-cornered contests across Sabah shows the voters’ dissatisfaction with the state government, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin claims.

Bersatu’s deputy president and Perikatan Nasional’s deputy chairman said the unusually high number of candidates reflects the growing number of Sabahans who feel pressured by economic and daily hardships.

“People are no longer happy with the way things are and want the chance to determine a better direction for themselves,” he said after launching a Perikatan event in Taman Mawar here last night to support its candidate for Sekong, Mohd Fazriee Awang.

Hamzah said the turnout, which he noted was strong and comprised both bumiputra and non-bumiputra residents, mirrored the rising sentiment across Sabah, where many feel compelled to step forward as candidates because they are unhappy with issues that have affected their livelihoods.

He also drew comparisons with previous administrations, saying Sabahans once felt they could freely question decisions, offer views and raise concerns.

Today, he said, many believe that such space is no longer available and voters are looking for a government led by responsible and professional individuals.

“People feel their voices are no longer being heard. That is why so many have stepped forward,” said Hamzah, who is also Dewan Rakyat Opposition Leader.

He also touched on the controversy sparked by Kedah exco member Mansor Zakaria, who claimed that Sabahans could easily be swayed by Gardenia bread during campaigns.

Hamzah said the comment had been exaggerated by unreasonable parties, adding that since Mansor had apologised and accepted responsibility, the apology should be accepted.

“I think that it just an issue that was raised and then blown up by unreasonable people.

“His intention was different, but by the time it reaches our ears, we feel it becomes something else. However, he has already apologised. Forgiveness should be given to someone who has taken responsibility for what he said,” he added.
