Search underway for escaped detainee in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Authorities are searching for a Filipino detainee who escaped from an enforcement agency’s truck while being transported to the Kepayan Prison on Wednesday evening (Nov 12).

Kota Belud OCPD Supt Shahrudin Mat Husain said the detainee, known only as Man, was on his way from Kudat on the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) truck when he escaped at 2.15pm.

“When they reached the Kelawat area in Kota Belud, Man was believed to have unlocked his handcuffs and jumped out through the vehicle window,” he said in a statement.

“MMEA enforcers tried to run after the suspect but could not catch up and lost him when he entered a forest near Kg Bundu, Kota Belud,” he said, adding that three other detainees were in the truck at that time.

He said Man who was detained for maritime-related offences would now also be investigated for evading custody under section 224 of the penal code.

This case would also be investigated under Section 223 of the Penal Code for the offence of escape from custody or confinement.

Supt Shahrudin urged those with information on the escapee’s whereabouts to contact the Kota Belud action centre at 088-973308.
