Joint forces track down international cybercrooks

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian police are collaborating with their Singaporean counterparts to locate criminals engaged in cybercrime operations based in Cambodia.

Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said they received information from the Singapore Police Force (SPF) regarding 27 Singaporeans and seven Malaysians implicated in the syndicate, which is believed to be responsible for losses of up to RM130mil.

“As such, the Malaysian police are taking action to track down and detain all individuals involved, with the seven Malaysians having been listed in the wanted list for their arrest and further investigation,” he said in a statement on Friday, Bernama reported.

He also emphasised the police’s ongoing commitment to enhancing international cooperation in addressing cross-border crime that poses a threat to security and public order.

The SPF was previously cited in a news report, stating that the syndicate impersonated government officials and was believed to be responsible for over 400 fraud cases, resulting in losses exceeding S$41mil (RM132mil).

Joint enforcement with the Cambodian National Police on Sept 9 led to the arrest of 15 suspects, including two Malaysians in Singapore.

Authorities then identified the 34 remaining suspects.
