KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has praised United States President Donald Trump for his commitment to supporting the peace deal between Thailand and Cambodia.

Anwar said Trump personally called Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to urge both leaders to accept the deal.

“I would say a great thank you and we, of course, admire your tenacity and courage, because the world needs leaders who promote peace strongly and to achieve that, we have to break some rules,” said Anwar at a joint press conference on the sidelines of the 47th Asean Summit.

Anwar also thanked Trump for his efforts to secure peace around the world, including Gaza.

“I also urge him to remain focused and ensure this comprehensive peace that the world requires. I am truly delighted to hear from you personally, how determined you are to ensure that peace is achieved in the most intractable areas in the world,” said Anwar.

After that, Hun and Anutin delivered speeches before the two prime ministers signed the peace deal, witnessed by Anwar and Trump.

In July, over 40 people were killed when tensions between Thailand and Cambodia erupted into the deadliest military clashes in decades.
