KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 10,170 police officers and personnel have been deployed to maintain security and ensure the smooth running of the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits, making it the force's largest operation this year.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the deployment involves various departments and tactical units, including the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, Special Branch, Special Actions Unit, 69 Commando, Federal Reserve Unit, General Operations Force, Air Operations Force, as well as other supporting elements.
He said the comprehensive deployment also covers strategic areas such as the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and official accommodation venues for international delegates.
"We have also assigned special teams for cyber security monitoring, airspace control and surveillance of high-risk areas.
"All aspects of security and traffic control have been meticulously planned to ensure preparedness remains at an optimum level," he told reporters after inspecting security preparations and rehearsals at KLCC on Thursday (Oct 23).
Also present were Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department Director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, Deputy Director of the Internal Security and Public Order Department (Operations) Datuk Fisol Salleh, and Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus.
Mohd Khalid said the rehearsal for delegate movements, which began Thursday morning, went smoothly and will continue until Saturday to ensure every security aspect is fully tested.
He added that several main roads in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and routes leading to KLIA have been closed in stages since last Friday, with more extensive closures expected from Sunday to next Monday during the summit's main sessions.
"Among the affected roads are Jalan Ampang, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Pinang, Persiaran KLCC and several major highways, including MEX, ELITE, NKVE and Guthrie," he said, advising the public to avoid the city centre unless necessary, plan their journeys in advance and use public transport.
Mohd Khalid also expressed appreciation to all security and enforcement agencies, including the Malaysian Armed Forces, Immigration Department, Health Ministry, Fire and Rescue Department, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Land Public Transport Agency, and Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia, for their strong cooperation.
"This integrated approach reflects the spirit of inter-agency collaboration in ensuring the success of the 47th Asean Summit," he said, while urging the public to comply with the law and demonstrate civic responsibility throughout the duration of the summit. - Bernama
