PM opens National Sports Day at Sultan Azlan Shah Roundabout in Ipoh

IPOH: Sports is not merely a platform to achieve glory but could also play a role in character building and uniting the people of various races in this country, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said the people, especially the youth, should actively participate in sports.

"I appreciate the efforts of our youth in sports and athletics because it can instil discipline, spirit and unity.

"Our country not only wants to be developed economically and intellectually, but also wants success in sports," he said when opening the National Sports Day at the Sultan Azlan Shah Roundabout in Meru Raya here on Saturday (Oct 11).

Anwar said each member of the society has a role to play, be it small or big.

"We try to help in any way we can, in a small or big way.

"All these are important to build our national strength through sports," he added.

Anwar also said he was proud to see the spirit of unity expressed by the multi-racial community in this country through sports activities.

"Continue with spirit, discipline and unity. Chinese, Malay, Indian, Kadazan, all are there. This is the true face of Malaysia," he said.

Also present were Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail.
