M'sia generated over 55,000 tonnes of e-waste in 2024, Dewan Rakyat told

PETALING JAYA: More than 55,000 tonnes of electronic waste (e-waste) were produced nationwide last year, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

Citing the Environmental Quality Report 2024, the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry said, however, that the approved processing capacity for e-waste last year was 131,004 tonnes.

"This indicates that only 42.3% of the approved capacity was utilised," it said in a parliamentary written reply on Friday (Oct 10).

The ministry added that 702.2 tonnes of e-waste were collected in 2020, followed by 2,650 tonnes in 2021; 2,657.3 tonnes in 2022; 2,528.78 tonnes in 2023; and 2,116.02 tonnes last year.

"Various public campaigns have been carried out to increase awareness of e-waste processing.

"The programmes are carried out together with the public and private sectors as well as related non-governmental organisations," it said.

It added that the Environment Department also holds an e-waste day together with education institutions, local authorities and local communities annually to increase awareness.

Yeo Bee Yin (PH-Puchong) had asked about the total amount of e-waste produced, collected and processed for recovery and reuse in Malaysia.

She also asked about the total amount of e-waste sent to landfills in comparison with the capacity of licensed e-waste processing centres.
