Number of flood evacuees drops in Perak, rises in Kedah


KUALA LUMPUR: The number of flood evacuees in Kedah continued to increase, while in Perak, the figure showed a decline as of 10pm on Sunday (Oct 5).

In KEDAH, state Civil Defence Force (APM) deputy director Maj (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain said the number of evacuees rose to 169 from 52 families, compared with 109 people from 33 families in the afternoon.

All evacuees from Kota Setar and Pokok Sena are placed at two relief centres - Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Langgar, which houses 76 people from 24 families from Mukim Langgar/Limbong, and the Pokok Sena multipurpose hall, which accommodates 93 people from 28 families from Mukim Gajah Mati and Mukim Lesong.

He said Sungai Kedah at Jambatan Lebuhraya in Kota Setar recorded a reading of 1.55m, exceeding the alert level of 1.5m.

Meanwhile, in PERAK, the number of flood evacuees in the Larut, Matang and Selama (LMS) district dropped to 26 from seven families this evening, compared with 31 people from eight families in the afternoon.

The state disaster management committee secretariat said in a statement that all evacuees from Kampung Matang Jambu and Kampung Telok Kertang were still taking shelter at a relief centre at SK Matang near Taiping.

SK Matang remains the only relief centre still operating after the Taman Kaya multipurpose hall was closed on Saturday, while the SK Simpang and SK Matang Gelugor were closed this afternoon. - Bernama
