Former accountant pleads not guilty to CBT involving over RM1.9mil

BALIK PULAU: A former accountant has pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here to four charges of criminal breach of trust involving RM1.9mil of company funds.

The accused, Chuan Chin Ghee, 29, who was then an accounting officer in a logistics company, allegedly made 231 fund transfers amounting to RM1,919,899.55 from the company's bank account to her personal account between Nov 6, 2020, and May 22, 2023, at Wings Freight Express Sdn Bhd in Batu Maung here.

The charges were framed under Section 408 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between one and 14 years, whipping, and a fine upon conviction.

Chuan, who is now a mooncake trader, pleaded not guilty to all four charges after they were read before Judge Ahzal Fariz Ahmad Khairuddin on Friday (Oct 3).

During proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Jin Hong proposed bail of RM30,000 for each charge, with additional conditions requiring the accused to surrender her passport to the court, report to the police station monthly and refrain from harassing the victim.

However, defence counsel M. Puveneswaran requested bail of RM10,000 for each charge, arguing that bail should not be punitive.

He also told the court that his client was married and had recently given birth to her first child two months ago.

The court then allowed the accused bail of RM40,000 in total with one surety for all charges, along with the additional conditions sought by the prosecution.

The case has been fixed for mention on Nov 13, pending submission of documents.
