Duo nabbed at US embassy protest released on bail

KUALA LUMPUR: The two protesters detained by police at the Global Sumud Flotilla and Palestine Solidarity rally on Thursday (Oct 2) have been released on police bail.

The two men, aged 23 and 32 years old, were released at about 9.45pm on Thursday (Oct 2).

A 51-second video has since surfaced with a police officer advising the two protestors shortly before they were released on police bail.

The police officer was heard explaining to the duo that having rallies was not a problem but they should not provoke or obstruct policemen on duty.

It was previously reported that two men were detained following a scuffle during a pro-Palestine gathering outside the United States Embassy here on Thursday.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus (pic) had said the peaceful assembly, which began around noon, drew about 50 participants.

"However, tensions escalated when several individuals attempted to block traffic along Jalan Tun Razak in front of the embassy.

"In the ensuing commotion, a police personnel sustained an injury to his mouth after being elbowed while attempting to maintain security at the scene," he said.

He said two local men, aged 23 and 32, were detained for obstructing police officers from carrying out their duties.

"A report has been lodged and an investigation paper opened under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant from discharging their duties. The case is still under investigation,” he said.

Comm Fadil reminded organisers and participants to comply with existing laws and regulations when exercising their constitutional right to assemble peacefully.

“While the police respect the public’s freedom to gather peacefully, we will not hesitate to take firm action against any individual or group who violates the law.

"Those with information can contact the KL police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or any nearby police station.
