Pedestrian killed after being hit by lorry while crossing road

PONTIAN: A 54-year-old pedestrian was killed after being hit by a lorry at KM75.5 Jalan Johor Baru–Batu Pahat here.

Pontian OCPD Superintendent Mohammad Shofee Tayib said the incident occurred around 11.40am on Saturday (Sept 27) when the victim was attempting to cross the road.

“Initial investigations suggest the accident happened when the woman was crossing from the right to the left.

“Due to the close distance, the 28-year-old lorry driver swerved and hit the victim on the road shoulder,” he said in a statement.

Supt Mohammad Shofee added that the victim died at the scene from severe head injuries, while the lorry driver was unharmed.

“This case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a jail term of between five and 10 years, as well as a fine of RM20,000 to RM50,000, upon conviction.

“Offenders will also face disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least five years,” he stressed.

Witnesses are urged to contact the Pontian district police traffic office or reach out to Inspector Wan Hairi at 012-3450565 to assist in the investigations.

Supt Mohammad Shofee also advised the public to always stay alert and obey traffic rules for the sake of road safety.
