JOHOR BARU: The government will keep its promise to reduce the price of RON95 petrol to RM1.99 per litre by the end of September, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister hit out at critics who doubted him on the matter, saying that the price reduction would happen.
"There were those who said 'it's now September. Where is the fuel reduction?'
"But just wait a while, we will fulfil our promise," he said, adding that foreigners would be paying RM2.50 to RM2.60 while locals would pay RM1.99 per litre.
In July, Anwar announced several key initiatives as a gesture of appreciation from the government to the people, including the RM100 one-off Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) assistance, a postponement of toll rate hikes for 10 highways and to reduce the price of RON95 petrol under a targeted subsidy scheme.
He reaffirmed the government's commitment to fight corruption in the country and said the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) would go after anyone involved in corruption.
"Whether it's a Tun, Tan Sri, ordinary person or government servant – I have directed them to carry on with their blitz," he said.
Anwar said he had even received "warnings" over the matter, adding that some of those involved are gangster bosses or have huge amounts of wealth.
He also defended his trips abroad as "working trips", which were at the invitation of other countries.
"On Sunday (Sept 14), I am heading to Doha for an emergency summit over Israel's attack on Qatar," he said, adding that he was invited by the Emir of Qatar.
On humanitarian aid, Anwar defended the government's decision to help Pakistan during the floods or setting up a field hospital after the earthquakes in Myanmar.
"No country will become poor by helping other countries in dire need," he said.
