KUALA LUMPUR: Out of 27 people detained by graft busters for their alleged involvement in “counter setting”, a total of 18 were Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) personnel, says Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain (pic).
The AKPS director-general said those detained were stationed at Terminal 1 and 2 of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
“We will give our full cooperation to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and I have contacted the chief commissioner (Tan Sri Azam Baki) on the matter.
“Those detained have been remanded,” he told reporters yesterday.
Comm Mohd Shuhaily said he believed the suspects’ involvement started even before the formation of the AKPS.
“We will wait and see the outcome of the investigation,” he added.
Earlier, it was reported a total of 27 individuals were remanded for their alleged involvement in a “counter setting” syndicate that allowed foreigners to enter the country without following proper procedures.
This follows an operation across four states by the MACC.
According to sources, the suspects – 19 men and eight women, aged between 20s and 50s – were picked up during an operation on Tuesday across Selangor, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur and Negri Sembilan.
Meanwhile, Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani granted a four-day remand for three enforcement officers until Sept 13 and another two officers for five days until Sept 14.
The applications were made at the Shah Alam and Ayer Keroh Magistrate’s Courts.
In Seremban, Magistrate Sara Afiqah Zulkipli approved a seven-day remand until Sept 16 for eight enforcement officers while Magistrate S. Arunjothy allowed a five-day remand until Sept 14 for another officer in Kuala Lumpur.
“They are believed to have given and received bribes in exchange for facilitating the entry of foreign nationals without going through the stipulated procedures,” one source said.
The operation also saw MACC seize over RM200,000 in cash, gold jewellery, gold bars, cars, motorcycles, branded handbags, luxury watches and mobile devices.
The arrests were part of an intelligence-led operation dubbed Ops Rentas.
