Anwar: Govt to prioritise developing high-skilled talent in tech in Budget 2026

PUTRAJAYA: The development of new high-skilled talent in technology fields will be one of the government’s priorities in the upcoming Budget 2026 that will be tabled in Parliament next month, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister stated that sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductors would receive special attention to meet the urgent needs of high-tech industries.

“We have to review our achievements and identify what is needed to accelerate and strengthen training programmes and the overall well-being of our youth, so they can thrive and contribute to the nation’s progress.

Anwar said this after officiating the International Conference on Social Sciences and Humanities 2025 on Wednesday (Sept 10).

Anwar also said that these efforts are vital to support significant investments by international companies, such as Infineon Technologies, which has invested in Kulim, Kedah.

According to Anwar, these initiatives would enable Malaysia to provide the skilled workforce required by such industries.

“That is why I am increasing allocations to meet the needs. This is certainly one of our national budget priorities.

Anwar also praised universities and the Higher Education Ministry for spearheading the establishment of AI faculties.

According to Anwar, this helped break down bureaucratic barriers that previously delayed the approval of new programmes.

“That is why it is important to strengthen our mindset and cultural values, including ethics, morals, history and religious beliefs, even as we pursue advances in technology,” added Anwar.

Budget 2026 was expected to be tabled in Parliament on Oct 10.
