Casting a line on Malaysia’s top catches

PUTRAJAYA: Ikan selayang (sardine), pelaling (Indian mackerel), kembung (mackerel), kerisi (threadfin bream) and gelama (croaker) are among the species with the most landings in Malaysia, according to the Fish Landing Statistics 2024.

Fisheries Department director-general Datuk Adnan Hussain said of the species, the selayang or cerut (sardine) had the highest catch at 94,234 tonnes, followed by the pelaling or temenong (79,685 tonnes), kembung (46,438 tonnes), kerisi (38,162 tonnes) and gelama (32,332 tonnes).

Additionally, other species like the common squid, ikan tongkol (mackerel tuna) and ikan cencaru (torpedo scad) also recorded significant landings.

In a statement yesterday, Adnan said the data underscores the importance of fish as a major source of protein for Malaysians, in addition to its role in ensuring national food security.

“These fish remain popular among the people because they are easily available and always in the market, thanks to sustainable resource management.

“The department will continue to strengthen conservation measures, landing control and habitat protection to ensure a secure supply of fresh fish, thereby supporting national food security,” he said, Bernama reported.
