Smoke from breakdown lorry triggers 12-vehicle collision in Muar

MUAR: A lorry's technical failure led to a 12-vehicle crash that left one person dead and six others injured here.

Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said police received a report about the incident at KM129.9 of the North-South Expressway at about 7.30am on Saturday (Aug 23).

"The accident was believed to have happened when a 48-year-old lorry driver experienced technical problems and stopped at the emergency lane.

"The lorry then emitted thick smoke, obstructing the view of other motorists approaching the area," he said in a statement.

ACP Raiz Mukhliz said the poor visibility caused five other lorries, five cars and a van to crash into each other.

"As a result, a 39-year-old lorry driver suffered internal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Six other drivers sustained minor injuries while five escaped unhurt," he said, adding that those involved were aged between 26 and 56.

He added that urine and alcohol tests conducted on the driver of the lorry that broke down came back negative.

ACP Raiz Mukhliz said the case is being investigated.

He also advised heavy vehicle drivers to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on long journeys.

Those who have information on the incident may contact investigating officer Insp Siti Ayu Mohamad Japri at 010-7724850 or visit the Muar police traffic station, he added.
