KOTA KINABALU: About 1,500 people from various political backgrounds have joined Parti Warisan, including tourism figure Datuk Seri Winston Liaw.

Warisan leaders described the intake as a reflection of growing support across different constituencies ahead of the coming Sabah state election.

Liaw, who contested in the Kota Kinabalu parliamentary seat in GE15 in 2022 under Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM), handed his membership form to Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal at an event on Sunday (Aug 10).

“I decided to join Warisan because I feel that we need a leader who cares for the rakyat, and not themselves,” he said.

Asked why he left KDM, the chairman of the Sabah Tour and Travel Agents Association said that, to the best of his knowledge, his membership had never been formally submitted to KDM.

Others who recently joined Warisan include 500 former Sabah PKR members, comprising about 400 from here and 100 from Sepanggar.

A further 420 new members were from Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) – 120 from here and 300 from Sepanggar, Warisan leaders said.

According to Warisan, 160 former Sabah Umno members from here also signed up for membership, along with 40 others from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) parties.

In addition, the state opposition party said, 171 new members joined from Sepanggar, 200 from Kota Kinabalu and 79 from Penampang.
