SINGAPORE: The Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) is a crucial component of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
The project is not just ordinary infrastructure, as it signifies the strong friendship, trust, and mutual respect between Malaysia and Singapore.
"The RTS Link is a major component of JS-SEZ. Without this link, I am sure it will not be as interesting as it is today," he said during a joint press conference with Singapore's acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow on Monday (June 30).
Earlier, both ministers unveiled the new RTS Link train at the Singapore Rail Test Centre near Tuas.
With this new milestone, Loke said the project has entered its final 18 months before the completion and commencement of service for the link.
"We are not just unveiling a new train today. What it represents is two nations coming together. As people around the world are busy setting up barriers, here we are breaking down barriers, building more connectivity and bridges," he said.
Meanwhile, his counterpart Siow expressed that the project was close to his heart as he was involved in the conceptualisation process back when he was a civil servant.
"I am happy to see the link emerge after the agreement was signed by Malaysia and Singapore eight years ago. Be it travel for visiting the sights, work or staying connected with loved ones, this link will bring Singaporeans and Malaysians closer," he added.
The rail service will see a train frequency of every 3.6 minutes for the shortest interval.
When completed, RTS Link will connect Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru to Woodlands North in Singapore. It will facilitate the commute between Singapore and Johor Bahru, with a train journey time of about five minutes between the two stations.
The RTS Link is targeted to commence passenger service by December 2026.
