JOHOR BARU: The operator of the oil storage facility in Masai that went up in flames recently has been ordered to conduct oil spill clean-up operations to prevent river pollution.
Johor health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said that after the fire on Saturday (June 21), the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) instructed the facility’s operator to clean up the drains and surrounding area the following day.

“After the massive fire, which involved the facility and several other premises, a lot of sludge flowed into the drains.
“I understand that MBJB will also be getting contractors to clean up the area to prevent the slick from flowing into and polluting the river,” he told reporters after a cheque presentation for underprivileged students at Foon Yew High School Seri Alam on Monday (June 23).
Ling, who later visited the scene of the fire, said the Johor Baru district officer has also called for a meeting with the relevant government agencies this afternoon to formulate a post-fire action plan.

“The Johor Environment Department will be acting as a technical agency to support and monitor the clean-up efforts to minimise the risk of river pollution,” he said.
He added that the air quality in the area is currently safe and the department would continuously monitor the situation and conduct tests.
On Saturday, flames engulfed five premises, affecting an area of approximately 1,000sq m, and destroying more than 15 vehicles, including tankers, cars and motorcycles.
Witnesses reported small explosions taking place as the fire released thick clouds of smoke, making the smog visible even from the Eastern Dispersal Link highway, some 8km away.
